I’m one of the few therapists in Iowa who is trained in Exposure/ Response Prevention therapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and phobias. Exposure and Ritual Prevention or ERP is endorsed and recognized as the “gold standard” treatment by the International OCD Foundation, Mayo Clinic, National Institute of Mental Health and many other organizations in the US and around the world.
ExRP is a process that slowly exposes the individual to the feared stimulus, and helps them tolerate the anxiety that accompanies the fear. ExRP includes teaching about how thoughts and emotions are connected and how the individual can be put back in charge of choosing how to feel.
I also incorporate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy when treating anxiety, and OCD. ACT is based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, but instead of focusing on changing thoughts, you are taught to learn to accept and cope with uncomfortable thoughts and emotions, and focus on living a life filled with meaning and intention.
